The Oaken Arms Company Information
General information
The Oaken Arms is on the Holyhead Road (A41) at the junction with Strawmoor Lane. Most of the land in this locality was owned by landowners (including the Wrottesley Estate) each owning quite a number of fields. But the site of The Oaken Arms (previously Foaming Jug) was shown on the Oaken Tithe Award of 1838 to be a small isolated plot of just over an acre – owned by John Royston and having a house on it. It was not then a licensed house.
John Royston did not own any other land in Oaken and there must have been some special reason why he (or his predecessors) acquired this corner site from a larger land owner.
By the early 1850's, The Oaken Arms had been established as one of the few public houses in the area at that time. Business was helped significantly by the demise of a much older inn on the Holyhead road, and also the increased amount of passing trade heading for Holyhead.
In 1997 the Inn was refurbished and subsequently took on the name The Oaken Arms; as it is now known today. Well known for its roaring fires in the winter, and ageless charm The Oaken Arms has established itself as a safe haven for travellers and locals alike.
The Oaken Arms is close to historic sites such as Boscobel House and The Priory. Explore Codsall and its Norman church or visit the David Austin Rose Garden, Albrighton, or the RAF museum at Cosford.
