About a year or so ago, I decided I wanted to get back into full time education as I wanted to complete a PhD. As I was self-employed and self-funding I decided that I would probably need to find some way of paying my family's bills and keeping the family ship afloat, if I wasn't to exhaust all our savings. I decided that I needed a job that I could do when it suited me, that would allow me an opportunity to study, and that would not knacker the hell out of me as I still needed to get to classes during the day in a reasonably compos mentis state. I chose the security industry. With its zero hours contracts and plenty of quiet time during those long 12 hour shifts, it seemed like the perfect answer. However, after a few months working in the Industry, I realised a few things:

Firstly, that security guards are unsung heroes. They are absolutely vital to our collective security, wellbeing and prosperity. Yet they are for the most part, overlooked, underpaid and unappreciated. One of the reasons for this is because the Industry is dominated by companies who have grown fat over the years on the back of hard-working security professionals, and feel that this is a winning business model. After all it's worked in the past, so why change it now.

Secondly, I saw almost immediately what a huge opportunity we had to disrupt the Physical Security Industry in the UK and elsewhere, in particular to stake out the On-Demand side of the market, where due to unplanned occurrences, a security presence is demanded on short notice due to licensing or insurance mandates.

An idea was born and began to take shape. SIA Control Room was established to provide a marketplace where licensed, vetted and experienced security professionals, many of them ex-forces could interact with and be deployed at relatively short notice to provide freelance security services to Clients in need of such services at a premium rate. No need anymore to work for a security company, when you can work for yourself providing professional security services supported by a dedicated security platform.
