Literacy Christchurch (formerly known as ARAS - Adult Reading Assistance Scheme) is a not-for-profit organisation which began in 1977 as a pilot scheme initiated by the Canterbury WEA with 8 volunteer tutors and 8 students.
ARAS Workplace was established in 1992 to assist those in work, including apprentices in a variety of industries.
ARAS became an incorporated society in 2001 and is one of 48 member schemes of Literacy Aotearoa.
Description
Literacy Christchurch trains a pool of volunteer tutors to work with adult students on a one-to-one or small group basis to help them improve their literacy and numeracy skills.
Currently Literacy Christchurch has approximately 150 students and 60 volunteer tutors.
Tutoring is student-focused, with tutors and students working in partnership to achieve student goals.
General information
ARAS has a long history with adult literacy. ARAS has been providing voluntary adult literacy and numeracy tutoring services in Christchurch and North Canterbury for 35 years as well as workplace services for 20 years.
ARAS uses volunteer tutors who tutor on a one-to-one or small group basis.
Tutoring is provided at no direct cost to the student.
