隨著電腦研究分工日漸細密，交通大學在民國六十九年於計算機工程系之外另成立資訊科學系，專精電腦科學理論的教學研究，為國內首創。二十年來計算機工程系（後易名為資訊工程系）與資訊科學系各自發展優良的教學研究環境，各擁有堅強的師資、學生陣容，以及廣大傑出之畢業校友，擔任資訊產業的領導人或中堅份子。
